Contributions

We proudly present you the highlights of the Fairtrade contributions over the first eight months of 2009. These contributions made to society are ongoing efforts of the prefered African supplier farms of Bloom.

 

Oserian (Kenya)

  • Completion and handover of the modern Oserian Fairtrade Administration block and two Laboratories by the Joint Body to Oserian high school. 
  • Completion of the new Training Centre intended for employees and their dependants for various vocational trade certificates.
  • Construction of Naivasha Women’s Hospital in conjunction with other Joint Bodies with the donation of doors and windows. Oserian is the largest individual contribution to the project. The hospital will have a total of 80 beds specializing on women health and paediatrics. 
  • The Inkorienito Health Centre has been put up with company contribution at 100% including the salary for the resident nurse and the medicines administered.
  • The school at Inkorienito is solely funded by the Oserian JB and it targets children from as young as five years to 14 years or pre-secondary children within the Maasai community. The there will be eight classes capable of taking in 40 pupils each and an Early Childhood Development Centre for the pre-primary children. This is intended to ensure that this pastoralist community settles down in one area to allow the young children to attend school.  

Ravine Roses (Kenya)

  • Construction of a foot Bridge across Kampi Chura swampy river area. This is one of the main areas where the workers live and access to work was previously difficult to access; it is now complete.
  • Disbursement of bursaries to intelligent but needy students joining high school from the surrounding five schools in the community. 
  • Facilitation of the sports teams through provision of uniforms with the Fairtrade logo and facilitation of matches at the Provincial league. 
  • Provision of interest free loans and cost shared education credit for workers and their families through the education credit scheme.  The amount recovered is revolved to enable sustainability of the project and increase beneficiaries. 
  • Medical Outreach program. Ravine has partnered with the District Hospital to reach out not only to the farm, but also to marginalized areas and communities of the resident district to provide medical services (Drugs, HIV/AIDS tests and VCT and immunization). 
  • Establishment of a Micro Finance scheme to benefit registered employee groups for business ventures.  This has seen worker groups run shops, motor cycle taxi services and maize mills. The project is under evaluation and monitoring for a more comprehensive usage. 
  • A Resource centre project was initiated in 2008 through the purchase of a plot. Project designs and fully approved plans have been undertaken. 
  • Completion of the first phase of rehabilitating Kamelilo bore hole. This involved the installation of a water pump, laying of water pipes and construction of water reservoir. The community now has the benefit of borehole water as they await Phase 2. 

Nini (Kenya)

  • Upgrade of pumping and pipe system which has resulted in saving of both water and electricity and a big plus in reducing Carbon Footprint.
  • Donated the first day of auction sales of new variety Ntertain to three Children’s Charities in the Naivasha Gilgil Area. 
  • Partnered with Elsamere Conservation Centre to take educational groups around the farm; averaging about one group a week.

Bigot (Kenya)

  • Donation of water Jeri cans and cash to three Internally Displaced Persons’ camps in Maai mahiu in May 2009.
  • Support of the Children’s Shelter by employing five of young men who are have reached age of majority on the farm.
  • Participation in the local football league to raise money for the less fortunate in the society.

Fontana (Kenya)

  • Purchase of substantial quantities of maize to supplement workers food provisions during the drought.
  • Continual supply of water to the neighbouring community.
  • Procurement of drip lines for a nearby orphanage to allow food production for sustenance. 
  • Consistent tree planting both at the farm and nearby Carol School.

Tropiflora (Kenya)

  • Renovation and reopening Kindergarten facility.
  • School bursaries granted for the second term.
  • Assisted local government in road rehabilitation.
  • Vocational training bursaries for employees.

Waridi (Kenya)

  • Provision of water tanks for nearby schools.
  • Vocational training for workers in computers and driving.
  • Vaccination against Hepatitis B for all employees.

Roseto (Kenya)

  • Construction of bicycle parking for employees.
  • Construction of a dam to hold ground runoff water during rainy season which is a more environmentally friendlier way of obtaining water. 
  • New clinic in place for the workers.

Kiliflora (Tanzania)

  • Maintenance of the access road to Sangarano after each rainy season.
  • Assistance with school fees to members of the local community.
  • Provision of fuel to Usa river police to allow night time patrols and enhance security.

Mairye Estates (Uganda)

  • Construction of another water facility in addition to the two already existing.
  • Planting of additional trees bringing the total to approximately 40,000.
  • Biannual maintenance of the access roads.

Khal Amazi (Zambia)

  • Ongoing construction of new onsite labour housing.
  • Improvement to the game wildlife area in progress.
  • Improved access routes around project and local district road reconstruction.
  • Continued support of the Zambian Police force with assistance in supplies and labour.

Florica Farms (Zimbabwe)

  • Provision of food packs to supplement income.
  • Assistance in payment of school fees for workers.

Flora Projects (Zimbabwe)

  • Payment of school fees for workers children.
  • Provision of educational and play materials for crèches and schools.
  • Support of recreational and sporting facilities for the communities.
  • Provision of funeral support for workers.
